The Building Department serves to protect the health, safety
and welfare of the public and to enhance the general quality of life through interpretation
and enforcement of the Westlake building codes as well as other applicable regulations
governing construction and land uses.
The department provides supervision of construction activities; acceptance of building
applications; issuance of all building and mechanical permits; registration of contractors:
and plan verification of compliance with the Ohio Building Code, International Residential
Code and Westlake Zoning Code. The department maintains existing properties through
the use of the Westlake Property Maintenance Code and the licensing of existing
apartment buildings and all one, two, and three family structures used as rentals,
excluding condominiums.

- Reviewing and approving all structural plans for single family and commercial construction.
- Issuing permits for construction including building, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
- Registering contractors for the city of Westlake.
- Investigating property maintenance and zoning code violations.
- Inspecting and licensing all apartments in the city of Westlake.
- Reviewing all development plans for commercial developments.
- Processing requests for zoning variances.

Building permits are needed for new and remodeling structural improvements of all commercial and residential -- homes, additions, garages, sheds, storage buildings, swimming pools, roofs, decks, siding, fences, signs, etc. before the commencement of work.
