The Westlake Recreation Department invites you to join the ranks of professional lifeguards with our comprehensive Blended Learning Lifeguarding Course, designed by the American Red Cross. This course equips you with the skills and knowledge to vigilantly safeguard lives in aquatic facilities.

Course Features:


  • Blended Learning Format: This modern course blends at-home online study with in-classroom instruction, providing a flexible learning environment. Participants will engage in online modules before attending practical sessions, ensuring a thorough understanding of lifeguarding principles.
  • Prerequisite Skills Test: To ensure readiness for the course, participants must display proficiency in:
  • Swimming 300 yards continuously with breath control and rhythmic breathing.
  • Treading water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  • Completing a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds, including a surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Comprehensive Curriculum: The course covers lifeguarding techniques for water parks and shallow water facilities, including First Aid and CPR/AED, preparing you for a variety of aquatic emergencies.
  • Certification: Successful completion of the course grants you an American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding, Water Park, Shallow Water, First Aid, and CPR/AED – a credential that signifies your capability and dedication to saving lives.

Course Requirements:

  • Age Requirement: Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class, with proof of age required.
  • Mandatory Attendance: Full participation in all sessions is essential for certification.
  • Pre-Course Preparation: All online coursework must be completed before the first in-class session.

Schedule & Fees:

  • In-Class Sessions: Sun 9/17 from 10-2pm, Fri 9/22 from 4:00-8:00pm, and Sat/Sun 9/23-9/24 from 9:00am-5:00pm.
  • Cost: $200 per participant, with a $150 reimbursement offered after 6 months of employment with the City of Westlake.
