[ARCHIVED] Summer Safety Tips

Fireworks Display

July 4th

The weekend closest to the Fourth of July sees the most impaired driving taking place. Don’t be a statistic; drive sober or get pulled over.

Every year thousands of people, especially children, are injured by fireworks. Mixing them with alcohol use is even more dangerous. It is illegal to possess, discharge, or sell fireworks.

Keep Thieves Out

In good weather, people spend more time outdoors and thefts from garages increase. Remember to keep your garage doors closed and locked when not in use, including the pedestrian door. Put cars, bikes and tools away before going in. Do not leavecar keys in the vehicle. Finally, leave outside lights on all night todiscourage trespassers.

Vacation House Check

If you are going on vacation for an extended period, call Westlake PD’s non-emergency number 440-871-3311 to be put on theVacation House Check. An officer will periodically stop by your home to see that the doors and windows are secure.

Take these additional precautions:

  • Stop the mail and newspapers, or ask a neighbor to pick them up.
  • Leave lights and a radio or TV on.
  • Ask your neighbor to keep an eye on your residence for packages or suspicious circumstances.

Pet Safety

Make sure your pets have food, water, and shade when outside this summer. Keep them leashed or on your own property. Remember also to pick up your pets’ waste. Your neighbors will be grateful, and you will help keep our water supply safe.
