Residents: Please dispose of excess trash, bulk items properly

Rumpke truck

Many residents are stuck at home now and have turned to cleaning their homes and yards to pass the time. That being said, Rumpke is seeing an increase in excessive trash and bulk items at the curb.

With this in mind, it seems an appropriate time to remind residents of proper procedures for disposing of excess trash and bulk items:

  • Residents can only use the provided Rumpke carts. Personal cans cannot be used and will not be serviced.
  • Excess trash can be placed in bags only and placed next to your rubbish cart. Bags must weigh less than 50 lbs.
  • If you require an additional rubbish or recycling cart, contact Rumpke at 800-828-8171 and select option No. 2.
  • Excess trash and bulk is limited to 2 cubic yards (roughly what will fit into the back of a pickup truck).
  • Mattresses, box springs, and any upholstered furniture must be wrapped in plastic.
  • Bulk items should be dismantled into pieces that are not more than 4 ft. long and 2 ft. wide and bundled, per city guidelines: https://www.cityofwestlake.org/460/Heavy-Bulky-Refuse
  • Hazardous waste is not accepted in the trash. The spring Household Hazardous Waste Round-up has been postponed, but the Fall Round-up is still on schedule: https://www.cityofwestlake.org/406/Computer-Household-Hazardous-Waste
  • Latex and water-based paints can be disposed of with the trash as long as they are dried up inside.
  • Refrigerators and freezers must have the doors removed to be collected.
  • Older tube TVs must be less than 32 inches. This does not apply to newer flat screen TVs.
  • If you put out bulk items, you must call Rumpke 24 hours in advance so they can plan accordingly for collection.
  • Yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, weeds, flowers, plants, etc.) can only be placed in paper yard-waste bags or plastic trash bags and set out in or next to your rubbish cart for Rumpke to collect. Personal waste receptacles cannot be used.
  • Brush (tree branches and limbs) are collected by the City, not Rumpke. Please reference the website for more information https://www.cityofwestlake.org/467/Yard-Waste-Brush

For additional information about rubbish and recycling collection, reference the city’s website: https://www.cityofwestlake.org/453/Rubbish-Recycling

If you have any further questions related to rubbish, recycling, or yard waste collection, please contact Rumpke at 800-828-8171, option #2.

If you have any questions regarding brush collection or round-ups, please contact Westlake Service Dept. at 440-835-6432.

Simple Recycling has postponed collection and there is not yet a timetable for when it will resume as of now. Any questions should be directed to Simple Recycling at 866-835-5068.
