Governor signs bill providing legal protection for employers, essential workers

Legislation signed by Governor Mike DeWine on Sept. 16, 2020, ensures liability protection for employers and essential workers with respect to the spread of COVID-19.


House Bill 606 applies retroactively and through September 2021, ensuring that individuals, schools, health care providers, businesses and other entities have civil immunity from lawsuits arising from exposure, transmission, or contraction of “certain coronaviruses.”


According to the bill’s language, it will “make temporary changes related to qualified civil immunity for health care and emergency services provided during a government-declared disaster or emergency and for exposure to or transmission or contraction of certain coronaviruses.”
