The City of Westlake honored its dedicated volunteers today with a spirited and touching appreciation luncheon held at the Community Services Center. This year’s celebration highlighted the 3,355 total volunteer hours contributed in 2024—proof that service and compassion are alive and well in Westlake.
Community Services Director Lydia Gadd welcomed attendees with warmth and humor, opening the event by asking, “How many volunteers does it take to change a light bulb?” She paused for dramatic effect before delivering the punchline: “Only one—but it takes the whole crew to bring the light.” The room erupted in laughter, setting the tone for a joyful afternoon.
The luncheon included a slideshow tribute to the remarkable acts of service performed throughout the year—from running the Connections Café and helping with Medicare and legal guidance to packing food baskets and leading intergenerational programs. Standout contributions included over 1,000 hours in the Connections Café, nearly 600 hours supporting the Food Pantry, and $3,920 raised through volunteer-led holiday fundraisers.
Guests also paused to remember three cherished volunteers—Eileen, Janet, and Vic—whose legacy of kindness continues to inspire the community.
Youth groups, including the WHS boys soccer team and the Youth Advisory Board, were recognized for their energetic involvement in activities like cleat drives, event planning, and decorating for the holidays. Meanwhile, volunteers with musical talents and warm smiles brought cheer to regular luncheons and programs like “Song Birds.”
Volunteer Coordinator Susan Laschinger closed the event by quoting Aristotle: “The essence of life is to serve others and do good.” In Westlake, that essence is clearly thriving, thanks to every selfless volunteer who chooses to show up, lend a hand, and light the way.
