WESTLAKE, July 24, 2025 – The City of Westlake Recreation Department today announced a comprehensive upgrade to Recreation Center Park’s athletic fields, playground and supporting facilities. While visitors will experience temporary closures, city officials say the improvements will deliver modern, accessible amenities for athletes, families and community members alike.
Construction crews will mobilize on Monday, July 28, closing both baseball and soccer field complexes, restrooms, concession building, playground and a segment of the walking trail for the duration of the project .
Athletic Field Enhancements
Baseball Fields: The two existing ball diamonds will be expanded to 90-foot base paths with adjustable pitching mounds. New artificial turf infields, modern dugouts with integrated storage and field lighting will allow extended evening play .
Multipurpose Field: A brand-new, regulation-sized artificial turf surface will accommodate both football and soccer. Flexible field markings will support smaller games and training, and new lights will extend usable hours .
Turf & Drainage: To resolve chronic drainage issues, the project includes regrading, sand-slitting, installation of a full irrigation system and selective turf replacement. Severely worn areas will be stripped, regraded and sodded, while the remaining turf will be overseeded after top-dressing .
Inclusive Playground Transformation
The existing playground will be replaced with a state-of-the-art, inclusive play environment designed for children of all ages and abilities. Highlights include:
A large play structure for ages 5–12, designed as a new park focal point.
A separate toddler area for children ages 2–5.
Inclusive features to support users with autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and mobility challenges.
Shaded benches and seating areas for caregivers and families .
Additional Site Improvements
Concession Stand: The existing building will be remodeled to enhance service capacity and accessibility.
Pavilion: The current pavilion remains open throughout construction, continuing to serve as a hub for gatherings and events.
Pathways: New walkways will link parking areas to park amenities, improving circulation and ADA access.
Trail Closure: A section of the outdoor multi-purpose trail will be closed temporarily; detours will be clearly marked .
