Westlake, OH (January 2, 2026) - In 2026, the United States will celebrate its semiquincentennial, which is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Each state and its communities have been encouraged to join in a celebration and commemoration of this anniversary. Westlake is fully embracing the opportunity to demonstrate the unique character of our city and its contributions to the nation during the 250 years.
This year, residents will have access to many 250th anniversary-themed events, along with programming at the city’s Community Services building and Recreation Center, Westlake Porter Public Library, Clague Playhouse, the Clague House Museum operated by the Westlake Historical Society, and through organizations including the Kiwanis Club, Town Criers, Rotary Club and more. The Westlake City School District is collaborating with the city to integrate this milestone theme in engagement efforts and learning opportunities where appropriate.
Westlake also plans to honor its residents and their family members who are veterans or active-duty military with a special “Saluting Our Service” campaign. The campaign will provide those who have served with a complimentary personalized light pole banner hung at one of Westlake’s highly trafficked intersections or Clague Park. As part of the 250th anniversary year, Westlake will elevate its traditional July 4th celebration with a more robust and unique fireworks show and a full day of festivities including food trucks, bands and family entertainment. We plan on concluding the year’s events with a formal dinner/dance fundraiser on Saturday, November 14, Westlake’s 215th birthday, to generate funds for residents in need.
As a result of its efforts to celebrate the semiquincentennial, Westlake will receive special recognition and designation as an official America 250-Ohio Community. Regular updates on the 250th anniversary celebration can be found on the city’s website or Facebook page.
