This rare sandstone house was built for Austin and Roxanna (Sears) Lilly. They came to Dover Township in 1832 from Ashfield, Massachusetts, an area from which many Dover settlers originated. This lot had been owned by Ozias and Hiram Smith. The Lillys erected this house around 1844 and lived here until 1867.
It is made with sandstone blocks two feet thick, finely tooled and dressed in the front and less elaborately on the sides and rear. The basement is constructed with massive rectangular stone blocks. Thick hewn timbers support the massive roof structure. A brick wing was attached to the east side around 1850 by Austin and Roxanna’s son.
One of Westlake’s seven Ohio Historical Markers historical markers is located at the front of the house.

In 1811, brothers James and Barnabas Hall and Barnabas’s wife Hannah were among the area’s first residents. James settled on Detroit Road near the Avon line, Barnabas and Hannah where the West Bay Plaza is currently located.
Their brother Charles Hall and his wife Lucy moved to the area in 1821 and built a home that still stands on the northeast corner of Columbia and Westwood Roads. Maple Ridge Cemetery began as the Hall family cemetery before 1830, and Columbia Road north of Lorain Road was known as Hall Road until about 1937.

The Sperry Inn was established in 1824 by Amos Sperry Sr. as a stagecoach stop along what is now Center Ridge Road, east of Clague Road. The building boasted five large fireplaces and a ballroom on half of its upper floor — quite the gathering place for early settlers!
Amos Sr., a blacksmith and tavern keeper, had arrived from Camden, New York. The inn served travelers for years before the building was later repurposed as a barn and eventually torn down around 1935. Today, the Pebblebrook development marks the site of this historic landmark.
Cheers to 250 years of Westlake history! 🍺
